Yeah, another one.

It probably seems redundant to post another portrait of Lady Gaga, but I actually did this one prior to the last one I posted. This one I spent more time on and used a higher quality paper on. I really liked how it came out so I replaced an old portrait I'd framed that wasn't very good of her with this new and improved one. I don't know where I'm going to hang it in the apartment. One day I'll get around to it!

Fall Quarter 2010 BEGINS

Had a pretty long, annoying day at Ai dealing with all manner of administration and registrars. The first day of classes is hectic and they weren't kidding about it being worse the start of Fall Quarter. That being said, I did a lot of waiting. While I waited I sketched this. Some kid asked me, "What class is that for?" and I said, "It's not.." While that was a quick, brief exchange, it dawned on me as time passed that that was a pretty stupid question considering it was the very first day of classes. I suppose by that time of the day I could have had a morning class, but it's pretty unlikely. I don't know. Maybe it wasn't the dumbest question in the world, but I felt it was kind of silly. Despite the annoyances, I survived and got everything I needed to accomplish done. So, all in all, WIN!

Time is money!

Obviously, I went to the zoo. The Philadelphia Zoo to be exact. Went with my Drawing and Anatomy class. Sketching live animals is hard. They move. Furthermore, it's not exactly fun to sketch in the zoo period. It's hard to find places to lean my pad on and there's a lot of nosy children. This one child liked my sketches so much she told me her phone number and told me to call her so I could give her art lessons. I don't know what was weirder; that this little child so freely gave out her cellphone number to a complete stranger or that she had a cellphone in the first place. She was pretty young. I'm a terrible judge of ages, but she seemed to be in the 7 to 9 age range. Well, just so you know, I turned her down. I'm an art STUDENT not an art TEACHER and my time ain't free! Time is money, honey! She should know that! She's got a cellphone!

Somebody's poisoned the watering hole

Got started on my final project for my Sculpting for Animation class. Keep in mind I said I "started" it. This isn't even as far as I got in this sitting, but I thought the sloppy, unfinished version was kind of cute. It looks nothing like this now. It's good to see where you started, though. It'll make for a striking comparison shot later.

Speaking of later, I went and saw "Iron Man 2" later. And it didn't even suck. Nice going, Jon Favreau! You made a decent second film. That's not an easy task. Just ask Indiana Jones or Back to the Future. Need I say more?

It's better than my ethics class, though

I hate this. It's supposed to be Zooey Deschanel. I can't find the picture I drew it from, but I think it's for the best that I not demonstrate that along with it. haha I got fed up with it not turning out how I wanted it to and just kind of finished it. That's why the hair isn't very finely tuned. What do you guys think?

Run, Sonic, Run

As I mentioned yesterday, Becky once swore to marry Sonic. So, naturally, I had to make her a special Sonic card for the occasion. I think it turned out pretty good. I did it really fast late the night before the 9am shower. And then I quickly scanned it onto the computer before we left at 8:30. Brutal. I'm definitely having my bridal shower at 2am just to be a bitch.

Oui oui yes yes

After a nice two days off, I spent my day in Philly being studious. Pretty good day. I found out some good news, but I'll post about that tomorrow! Anyway, I had my Conceptual Storytelling and Sculpture for Animation. Both classes are taught by two teachers I've previously had so it was a comfortable. Since it was our first day of sculpture, we played with clay for a while. Just to get the feel for it. That's when I created the Frenchmen, who we named Pierre. Then we had to actually do work and try to sculpt a skull. I've still got work to do on that and carried him home in a cup. It's the little things about being an art student that tickle my fancy. Like carrying a skull home in a paper cup. You don't do that everyday!

In other news, Pierre is no more. I had to demolish him. RIP Pierre.

Baby, I know you like

Had my final classes for Image Manipulation and Life Drawing. I had to take a snap of this drawing. It's not mine, but it's an epic piece of work that spurred a lot of controversy. It'll be one of the main things I'll remember from this class in the long run so I had to take a picture. I left this class feeling a lot better about my art and my style. So, all in all, I had a pretty decent day. Feels like even decent days are few and far between sometimes so I'm counting my blessings for this one!

It's a work in progress

Since I got a majority of my work done yesterday, I decided to do something that I'd been putting off for -whew- a long, long time. I can't even tell you. It's probably coming up on a year. I started it. Just drew the image in pencil and put it away. I wasn't sure how I was going to go about painting it. I wasn't keen on painting it with oils as I would completely lose my penciling. In my color theory class, we've been working exclusively with acrylic paints. I've never been a fan of acrylic paints, but I'm really starting to enjoy it. I still prefer the final look of oil, but I like that the acrylic paint dries quickly on the canvas so I can work for longer stretches of time. I didn't really take full advantage of that today, but I thought I'd show something in mid-progress for once. It's no where near finished, but at least it looks different than it has for nearly a year.

I want you to acknowledge it

At the Ferry Ave stop, I always admire this building. In a lot of ways, the general nature of graffiti is frowned upon. And, in many circumstances, I agree with that. Some graffiti is like the equivalent to pissing on a wall permanently. But clearly other graffiti is truly art. That's the kind I like. Feels wrong calling it graffiti when it's so interesting and well composed. So, really, thanks to the people that were involved in this lovely piece of art. I enjoy it on my journey. Keep up the good graffiti! You bring it to a higher level!

Makes you worry about gravity

Last quarter in my Fundamentals of Drawing class, we didn't draw a nude model until about the last two weeks of class. That was not the case at all for my Life Drawing class. We started drawing nude models the very first day. Makes sense considering it's "life" drawing. I suppose by the end of this quarter I'm going to be pretty awesome at drawing the human form. At least I hope I will be. Everyone in my class seems to generally dislike the instructor. I don't know how I feel about him. He's an odd fellow. Despite his quiet manner, he has a slight speech impediment and wears the same very ornate jeans, cuffed at the bottom with pristine white, high-top sneakers every week. He also plays XPN during classes, which is good until it turns to smooth jazz mid way through the night. But none of that is the problem that people have. The thing that my classmates seem to dislike about him is his lack of opinion on their work. Sometimes the most he'll say to you is, "you've got the right idea" and walk on. I don't require a whole lot of encouragement or critiques. I'm happy to just draw the figure and see what I can do without someone telling me what I'm doing wrong. I'm fine being told that too, but I can go either way. He does comment and give advice, though. But some people seem to just dislike the things that he says period. I don't know. These kids! Can't please them! I'll say that I really did like my instructor, Rob, from my last drawing class, but he was younger and a lot more personable so that's almost expected.... But I digress... I'm rambling... Kind of looking forward to seeing my stuff by the end of quarter. Okay. Done. No more Ai blabber.

Heart Stock No. 5

The Sound of Heartache

Another in my Heart Stock Series. The 5th. It's an idea I've had bouncing around in my head for awhile. I've got a few more, but I'm glad I was able to see this one to fruition. And even more glad to have an idea that I not only completed, but could give to Jamie. I would have showed this one earlier, but I didn't want to spoil the surprise!

Tis the season to give Bob Dylan's face as a gift. Does anyone remember the video for for "Take On Me" by A-ha? Something about the way I drafted Bob reminds me of the art in that video. Classic. Bob always was way ahead of his time.

You'll never know why your love runs dry

This started out as a completely different thing. It was a portrait that wasn't working out. So I started just messing around with it with pen and marker and color and doing this and I kind of like the end result. Kind of has a graphic, comic type appeal to it.
